In this year when Isaac Murphy would have celebrated his 150th birthday and the Keeneland racetrack celebrates its 75th anniversary, a group of booklovers is sponsoring the 'What If Everybody Reads' project. According to the organizers, Kentuckians Frank X Walker and J.H. Atkins, the project aims to foster literacy and promote knowledge of multicultural history.
The project focuses on two books, Perfect Timing (by me - Patsi B. Trollinger) and Isaac Murphy: I Dedicate This Ride (by Frank X Walker). Both books explore the life and times of Isaac Murphy, an African-American jockey who became the first person to win three Kentucky Derbies. My book is ideal for children and middle-grade students. Frank's book is more suited for teens and adults. Together, the books challenge schools, communities, and churches to answer the question: What great things can happen when Everybody Reads the same book?
