Name Your Racehorse
If you owned a racehorse, what would you name it? If you want to enter the Kentucky Derby, your horse must be registered with the Jockey Club. Here are the Club's rules about choosing an official name:
• There can be no more than 18 letters, spaces, or punctuation marks.
• You need special permission to use the name of a famous person.
• You cannot re-use the name of a famous horse.
• You cannot use curse words or words with a bad meaning.
Can you come with a great name for your Thoroughbred?
Design Your Own Silks
You also can choose the design and colors for the jacket and cap that the jockey will wear while riding your horse. Sketch a jacket and cap showing your colors. If you need an outline sketch, download this easy-to-use drawing.
About those little sketches on this website?
In the book, Perfect Timing, Isaac always wear yellow silks so readers can find him in the pictures. In real life, he wore yellow silks in his first race, but other colors in other races: red the first time he won the Kentucky Derby, green with a white sash for his second Derby victory, and a purple jacket with orange sleeves for his third Derby victory. You'll find my rough sketches of those silks a various places on this website, plus the green-and-white striped jacket Isaac wore for many races.
